RetirEMigration Limits

Many people build strong careers and reach very high positions and roles like VP, SVP, Sr Dir and all. They would have started from deep nwell and substrates and built a strong foundation with their talent, skills, capabilities like active, non linear devices. They would have built strong drive strengths that can handle large capacitances, transitions. Over a period of time, they move up the metals, layer by layer, through the competitive congestion, networking on the way with useful xtalk, collaboration with others. They reach to the top layers with strong via pillars. At the top, they draw the required power and current from the bumps and distribute to their orgs and teams. The resistance at the top is lesser and congestion is lesser. They normally then are used to talking more, giving instructions and not much of listening. The top layer widths are more and they can handle more current and the people at top handle lot more pressure. so far so good but the issue comes up when they retire. When they retire at the top role, suddenly the power is gated and they feel driveless. Imagine a VP suddenly retiring; a person so much used to giving directions, decisions, instructions suddenly nobody listens. With so much more timing window available and exposure to the outside world right from auto wallahs to apartment society members to bbmp people. nobody listens they way this person is used to and there is a sudden switch from 1 to 0. instead the person should be smart keep reducing his/her grade gradually every year or two, all the way to the ground, base layers. During this, the person again gets used to the ppl at different levels of the org, the congestion, the xtalk, the fight for the tracks and when the person retires at close the base layers, it will be that much more easier to cope with the other signals. The Vias help to gradually reduce the current and not violate the Retiremigration limits..

  2. One should learn to gradually reduce his grade every year or two.
Slow descent is easier for married PD engineers.
    That's basically pre-retirement marriage counselling:
“Honey, starting next year, I’ll stop giving directions and start taking them.

Consider it my slow descent from Metal-8 to Metal-1… or in marriage terms, from ‘I’m the decision maker’ to ‘Yes dear, whatever you say’.”
